Leading job site ‘Indeed’ recently revealed some insightful information about the current state of the job search: just under 50 percent of all job searches are done via a mobile device — a 17 percent leap over a one-year period of time. Can you afford to reach only half of the talent pool? Of course not. And that’s just the start of it.

Let’s take a closer look at why mobile matters, along with how you can position your organization for optimal success in the recruiting game.
The Case for Mobile

Indeed discovered some additional findings, including the following:

  • 200,000 mobile applications are filled out every day.
  • 51 percent of all job applications are submitted via mobile.
  • In just one year, mobile applications grew by four times.
  • 8pm is the peak time for mobile job searches, compared to 9am for traditional desktop job searches

But perhaps most noteworthy of all? This one telling titbit. Employers who accept applications via mobile receive a whopping twice as many, from quality candidates.

The takeaway? Not only will you gain access to more candidates by embracing the mobile platform, but you’ll gain access to better candidates. We like to think of it as the Holy Grail of talent acquisition.

What This Means For You

These figures should make one thing glaringly obvious. If you think you can’t afford to adopt mobile as part of your talent acquisition strategies, you’re thinking about it the wrong way. These statistics show that you can’t afford not to.

But not just any old mobile enabled site will do. A poor mobile site is as bad as — or even worse than — no mobile site at all. In order to engage job searchers while representing your company in a compelling way, your site must not only be mobile optimized, but also fully functioning with features like the option to apply with a single click and compatible across both iOS and Android operating systems. (Indeed further reveals that while iOS systems account for the largest share of mobile searches compared to Android, they’re relatively well-matched: 54 percent compared to 46 percent, respectively.) Additionally, you need to ensure that all of your content is easy to consume on mobile devices.

In short: making the switch to mobile is no longer about gaining the competitive advantage in today’s intense job market. Instead, it’s a matter of merely keeping up. Mobile also enable more seamless resume vetting and applicant tracking to help keep things as simple and streamlined as possible on both ends.
